When a company earns profits or has accumulated earnings, it can either be reinvested into the business or can be distributed among the shareholders known as a dividend. Dividends are distributed proportionately among all investors. For example, A company may give ₹5 dividend/ per share so a person with 10 shares of the company will receive ₹50 as a dividend.
